HOW TO LET YOUR WRITING TRULY BLOSSOM: REMOVE YOUR EGO
āIām afraid to hit publish. What if it other people see my writing? What if it sucks? What if I look stupid? What if itās not perfect? What if someone else has already written thisāand better?!ā
One thing holding you back from being the writer or creator you want to beā¦ is your ego. Hereās how mine has held me back in the pastā¦
1) Your ego holds you back from publishing. Why? Because itās not āgood enoughā. Get over yourself. Perfectionism is a creativity killer. Our egos keep us from publishing our warts, our failures, imperfect sentences and unimpressive vocabulary. Perfectionism is a cloak for the ego. Imperfection is vulnerabilityāour ego's biggest fear. Let it go and let yourself grow.
2) Your ego holds you back from your writing getting seen. A paradox of being successful writing online is by making your writing not about you. The less you fill your ego with writing about you, the more you'll resonate. It's about the reader. Always.
3) Your ego holds you back from reading the works of others. Afraid that your idea has been written about before? Reality check: it has. And thatās so amazingly and unbelievably OKAY! It hasnāt been written about by YOU.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT š¤·āāļø
1) Destroy your perfectionism with a daily publishing habit. Leverage constraints to get your content out the door. Constraints, constraints, constraints. #ship30for30
2) Focus on the reader. Put yourself in their shoes. What stops your thumb from scrolling? What kinds of things command your attention?
3) Your ideas are 99.9% unoriginalābut YOU are original and your take on the idea is what matters. Donāt be afraid to read what others have shared. Youāre youāand youāre original. You have value. Ignore your ego.
