FEEDBACK: The Self-Improvement “Hack”
Are you open to feedback?
Or do you hit publish …and then proceed to stick your fingers in your ears?
I used to. Until I wanted to be better.
Not being open to feedback is fine if you’re not trying to improve.
But simply put: a lack of feedback makes it 1000x times harder to make your work BETTER.
Sure—you can validate with data. But data only helps to an extent: you know something worked/didn't—but you don't know WHY.
Data doesn't tell you…
→ WHAT enticed them to click-through
→ WHY people read/watched
→ HOW they felt
→ WHAT was the 'aha' moment
→ HOW you inspired/helped/hurt/bored them
Data helps. But you NEED feedback.
Don't fear it. Let go of your ego. Crave feedback for improvement. Learn to ask for feedback in everything.
Ask to give others feedback, and readily provide it when requested. You'll find most people will be pleasantly surprised with the offer if you're constructive & helpful. It shows you’re paying attention to them and that you care.
Feedback is reciprocal.
Providing feedback is a signal you’re also open to receiving it. It’s a give and take. The more you give, the more you get.
So don’t be selfish. Give as much—if not more—feedback than you receive. But be constructive, be timely, and be kind.
Let’s normalize feedback in our conversations, workplaces, relationships—our LIVES. It's REALLY hard to improve if you don't know how.
→ Feedback is “THE HACK” to improvement ←
Get on it.
Lastly… AVOID THE FEEDBACK SH*T SANDWICH
Here’s a great article explaining how to avoid the Sh*t Sandwich (aka Feedback Sandwich) that was popularized for god knows why. The 5 ways to avoid it include…
→ The 5 Word Review
→ Trying a “Feed Forward”
→ Using your One-on-Ones for feedback
→ Trading Praise for Feedback
→ Ask questions to create feedback & self assessment
CREATOR HIGHLIGHTS
→ Li Jin || Li is co-creator of SideHustleStack.co — an amazing resource for creators. She also co-hosts Means Of Creation: “a talk show about the passion economy.”
→ Nick Wignall || Nick’s a psychologist and a full-stack creator 🤯 — and he has a pretty great newsletter. Not to mention podcast, blog, and Creating Calm course.
→ Jay Clouse || Jay is criminally underfollowed. At the very least, check out his brilliantly produced podcast Creative Elements. Interviewees include James Clear, Dickie Bush, Anne-Laure Le Cunff, Vanessa Van Edwards, Pat Flynn, Alex Cattoni, & Tim Urban.
TWEET OF THE WEEK
A tweet about building the newsletter you’re reading. I’m trying to be as open and transparent about how I’m building and growing Growth Currency—DM’s are open if you have any questions, feedback or advice. I’m all ears (eyes?).

→ Spotlight your personal achievements (not your privileges)
→ Embrace your quirks
📈 MARKETING

👀 PRODUCTIVITY
5 Awesome Ways to Level Up Your Google Sheets by Andrew Kamphey (BetterSheets.co)
I’m a bit of a spreadsheet & data nerd. But I know zilch compared to Andrew. Check out this amazing mini-tutorial on Google Sheets—including:
→ Create an Interactive To-Do List with IF() Formula

→ Change the Default Font from Awful Arial
🎧 PODCAST
#482: Adam Grant | The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know on The Jordan Harbinger Show
This listen is filled with ideas that should challenge your way of thinking. Lots of topics discussed, including the Dunning-Kruger effect, binary bias, and thinking again.
→ 35:30 - “We learn more from those who challenge our thought process, as opposed to those who just reaffirm our conclusion.“
→ 47:43 - “When you lack the ability to produce excellence, sometimes that means you also lack the ability to recognize excellence.”
→ 1:01:44 - “Binary bias is this idea in psychology, where you take a really complex continuum or spectrum and you oversimplify it into just two categories.
