I’m bullish on Twitter Spaces.
So much so, I was this 🤏 close to titling this post:
“Why Twitter Spaces will overtake Clubhouse as the #1 audio community app in 2021”
I believe when it’s launched for all users (currently in beta mode), it’s going to revolutionize the entire platform.
Most importantly for its users like you and me—I believe it will help YOU grow your audience and Twitter community exponentially faster than the usual tactics. And that’s what we’re all about here: GROWTH.
More on that below, but first…
What is Twitter Spaces?
Twitter Spaces launched its beta version in December 2020 to a select number of Twitter users. It’s recently opened the door to more users.
Spaces allows users to host an audio “space” where others can join in the conversation.
Simplified: It’s Clubhouse for Twitter.
Clubhouse launched in April 2020. Nearly a year later, it’s still an invite-only platform—and only available on iOS—if you’re lucky enough to get a coveted invite.
Clubhouse attempted to capitalize on FOMO and scarcity. And it’s going to backfire.
Android users on the outside looking in (like myself) are now eyeing up Twitter Spaces instead without a second glance at Clubhouse. 👋
I won’t get into the nitty gritty of Twitter Spaces and all its features—Neil Patel gives a great summary here.
Instead, I’d rather share some tactics and actionable advice on how to leverage the potential power of Twitter’s latest upgrade 👇
How To Grow Your Audience with Twitter Spaces
The advantage for YOU as a Twitter user is that you’re already on the platform building a following.
Here are the ways I can see users leveraging Spaces to grow:
#1 Host a Space (obviously)
Get in front of your community and start hosting spaces ASAP. Becoming a pioneer for your niche/community will be key. Build credibility within your community, word will spread and as long as you’re bringing value to your audience—growth is inevitable.
#2 Be engaging
Whether your hosting, speaking, or listening—you need to be engaging. Everyone knows one of the ultimate Twitter growth tactics is to engage with other users. Same goes here. Participation is essential.
BUT—don’t engage just for the sake of it.
If you’re hosting—have a plan or at least topic to discuss.
If you’re speaking—share relevant information and experience. Nobody cares about what you ate for breakfast (unless that’s the topic being discussed).
If you’re listening—use emojis to show others you’re actually listening. If you have something of value to add, request to speak.
#3 Be Respectful
It seems obvious but needs to be said: respect begets respect.
People are more likely to listen to you and follow you if your tone, thoughts and opinions are respectful. That doesn’t mean you can’t opine on controversial topics, but do so respectfully with the acknowledgment that you could be wrong (as you likely are).
#4 Be Open
You’re bound to be in Spaces with people from diverse backgrounds, from all over the world, who aren’t necessarily part of your Twitter tribe.
Be open to listening to them. Be open to sharing with them. Be open to following them.
Open-mindedness is a scarce resource and a super-power.
